Together We Will Endure

The competitive athlete in the Dūrātus community.

Posted on September 25, 2022

This post has to start with this phrase...there is no athlete that is more important than another within our community! Dūrātus was born with this conviction and always hopes to hold this belief and practice as central to who we are.

That being said, different athletes (with all their various goals) do require different things from our gym. While our programming is built on the foundation of general physical preparedness (GPP), we recognize that any specific goal beyond this requires nuanced programming and coaching. This has lead us in the past to offer half marathon training groups, a power lifting club, specific olympic lifting classes, individualized Ironman training plans and the list could go on and on.

This includes our DCP level of programming. The DCP (Duratus Competitors’ Program) was born out of a desire to better serve those athletes in our community wanting to compete in the sport of fitness. While this desire to compete is actualized at many different levels (the CF open, local competitions, regional competitions and so one), for any athlete to progress in the spot of fitness additional skills, strength and mastery of technical movements is required. The DCP is a programming approach layering these needed skills on top of our daily whiteboard programming. Programming this way is intentional as we never want to create a scenario that some athletes are viewed as more important or better than others (refer to opening statement). Everyone in the Dūrātus community is doing the same foundational programming, some are just choosing to add in extra work specific to the goals they have.

I will be the first to admit that I love competing in the sport of fitness. It's framed much of my fitness experience, but I do not believe it should be the goal of every individual at Dūrātus. If you love competing and want to pursue it, then we want to support you however we can. If you enjoy coming in to classes and working hard and then not thinking about fitness again until the next time you are in the gym, you are still just as much a part of the Dūrātus community. If you want to run a first marathon, then your training plan might need to adjust a little, but you are still a part of the Dūrātus community.

A few weeks ago, some of our staff and a few individuals that have been vocal and explicit with their goals to compete in the upcoming CF season, met to discuss the DCP, its focus, and how it's offered. During this meeting, we were able to grab some feedback that has helped us to create a better structure and formalize our programming for a larger population.

Part of what we discussed was the continued need for athletes with common goals to train alongside one another. While we have athletes with competitive aspirations training throughout the day, there is a concentrated group training during the afternoon open gym hours and then again on Saturday after our classes. These specific times have worked well and allowed us to better value our class environment by minimizing interruption as best we can. Creating an excellent class experience (with no potential interruptions), while also creating the freedom for our athletes to pursue all their various fitness goals is easier said than done, but we are constantly seeking to do our best to support all of our people. What we can be sure about is that no training times at Dūrātus are exclusive - anybody at anytime could show up to a class, an open gym or Saturday afternoon and they will be welcomed.

Additionally, please know that the DCP programing is free for any member that would like access. If you don’t currently have it, ask a coach and we can walk you through the process.

Whatever aspirations you have, whatever goals you have set, whatever fitness endeavors you want to pursue, our coaching staff and this community is behind you. If you feel inclined to explore a different approach or tighter focus on your fitness journey/goals, please reach out to any coach and we can collaboratively build a training plan that matches your aspirations. We want to be a part of your process and will work tirelessly to help anyway we can.

Endure Together,

Kevin
