The Benefit of Functional Training
I’ll be honest, I spent the first decade of my career in fitness mostly amazed by, inspired through and focused on the emerging sport of competitive fitness. The various local competitions and yearly push to the CrossFit games was what truly held my attention. As an athlete, I was in a constant state of prepping and peaking, and as a programmer/coach there was bias in what I offered.
There is nothing inherently wrong with this and in many ways I still love to support, encourage, and train those desiring to compete in CrossFit at various levels. But, as I have aged and life has shifted, I have come to more deeply appreciate the benefit of functional strength and conditioning beyond its expression on the competition floor.
Our style of training truly does create robust athletes with confidence to undertake whatever challenge lays ahead of them. In the past few years, members have ran half/full and ultramarathons, participate in the Tactical games, swim in open water distance races, perform in strongman events, finish Ironman race and swim and Olympic lift at a masters national level - just to name a few.
Each of these endeavors was built on the foundation of first pull ups, mile PRs, 1RM power cleans, sets of wall balls, echo sprints and all the other things we do in the gym on a daily basis. Functional strength and conditioning is an incredibly efficient and effective tool to the help prepare people for any goal that they want to set their sights on.
My encouragement as we move into our summer season - trust and know that your consistent hard work in the gym is building a foundation of health and fitness that can be used to tackle any obstacle and leveraged to approach any goal.
Keep your lifts snappy and conditioning tough,
Coach KPL

It will be held the evenings of June 23, June 30 and July 7. You do not need to be able to attend all 3 nights to participate.
Sign ups are up by the whiteboard - claim your spot by June 15!
Murph 2026 Recap
Over 50 members of our community came together on Memorial Day to take on Murph.
Murph serves as a reminder that persevering through physical challenges pales in comparison to the sacrifices of those who surrendered their lives in service to their country.
By taking on challenges, like Murph, we cultivate resilience and the capacity to triumph over new obstacles. Overcoming these physical trials instills a profound sense of perseverance, building the emotional fortitude required to face future hardship
Welcome Coach Hunter!
I have been involved with Dūratūs on and off for the past year after I was invited to a class. I immediately felt welcomed, and encouraged, like I had been a part of the community for months. From then on, I knew I wanted to be a part of what made this gym so special.
I am a Spokane native and lifelong athlete who grew up playing multiple sports before continuing my baseball career at the collegiate level. After returning home, I married my wife McCall. We have a son Beau and another little one on the way.
I am passionate about all aspects of health and wellness and enjoy helping others build confidence through movement and pursue their goals both inside and outside of the gym. Alongside coaching, I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Whitworth University, where I look forward to combining my background in athletics, fitness, and rehabilitation to optimize health and performance.
Dūrātus High School Girls Strength & Conditioning Summer Program

We will need at least 10 athletes to make the program viable, so please share to anyone that may be interested or reach out to staff@weareduratus.com with any questions.
